The Shearer From Kirkstall Poem by Francis Duggan

The Shearer From Kirkstall

In an old bush pub in outback New South Wales
He talks of his past as he sinks a few ales
Of his boyhood in Victoria in the Village of Kirkstall
For him at least boyhood years the best years of all
A thirty year old shearer in his shearing prime
The type of bloke bush poets honour in their rhyme
A top shearer he averages two hundred sheep a day
One might say he works very hard for his pay
As a womanizer he has won renown
He has had a woman in every Bush Town
In the shearing Seasons to where he has worked near
Though of his sexual prowess from him you won't hear
And though from Kirkstall he may be living far away
He talks about his old homeplace every day.
