The Shadow Of Your Smile Poem by Frank Letras

The Shadow Of Your Smile

I spent some time recently
In the shadow of your smile
Resting in the cool space
Between that cold shoulder
And that tender loving embrace,
And although it is far
From a bad place
I could do without it
At least for a while.
I don’t know quite how I got there
I thought I took great care
To avoid causing you to frown
But as I went about town
It slowly began to filter down
That you were close to tears
And just to confirm my worst fears
Your shoulders began to shake
Your lower lip began to quake
I realised my mistake
Too late to undo what I’d done
And decided to let sleeping dogs lie
And when all the pretence was gone
I sat there and let you cry.
The world went a little colder
And everything turned grey
I suddenly felt a lot older
This was no ordinary day
But I still feel there was no other way,
But of all the memories of you
Which I have to compile
The least that I want to do
Is live again
In the shadow of your smile.
