The Sea Poem by Raymond Farrell

The Sea

The sea
Batters the rocks
Whether it be
From a sudden storm
Or due to
The predictable
Rise and fall
Of the tide
And there is nothing
You and I can do
It is so much mightier
Than you and I
The thought
Has never crossed our minds
We know we cannot
Displace the moon
Push the jet stream
North or south
Change the barometric pressure
Or change the earth's axis
We may understand the phenomenon
Yet can do nothing
But happily we stand
On the shore
In awe
Listening to the waves
Crash against the rocks
And letting the cool mist
Rising up
Refresh us
And enliven our spirits
It mocks our finiteness
And impotence
But not deliberately
Or maliciously
We are not offended
Nor were those
Who stood
Where we stand
A thousand years ago
They are long gone
And we will be too
Soon, ever so soon
But the sea
Will go on
Ebbing and flowing.
