The Old Year Poem by Dr John Celes

The old year had its ‘ups and downs';
The old year brought some sorrows, joys;
The old year had its surprises;
The old year was both good and bad.

Some dreams and aims are unattained;
Some problems defied solution;
Some desires are not fulfilled;
Some nagging dilemmas, unsolved.

Some nations had their ‘peaks and troughs';
Some wars had ceased; new ones began;
The plight of poor must be improved;
But by and large, old year was good.

God blessed us in so many ways;
God saved us from grim situations;
God found the sheep that went astray;
God met our wants despite delays.

Miracles happened too galore;
Light dispelled darkness; truth prevailed;
God rained his blessings, mercy, grace;
But man stays discontent to core.

Many had died in ways so strange;
Many were born miraculously;
The climate changed for worse with smog;
The market trends are off the mark.

But we must thank the Almighty;
We cannot do a thing alone;
We must be pure of mind and heart;
We must pray fervently to God.

God keep our nation one and strong;
God solve our looming problems big;
God bless our people and our land;
God rout devils, evil-doers!
