The Old Frayed Shoes Poem by Daniel Sweetnam

The Old Frayed Shoes

Walking through this unending valley
Alone, afraid and scared
Tired, I boldly take a step
Wondering if I should even dare.

My feet walk only a forward direction
My head keeps looking back
My mind stays in between them both
Just longing for a rest.

This valley is too vast for me
No end is there in sight
As I walk this stormy plain
Is this path I'm on still right?

From time to time I see another
It's nice not being alone
But then I see their pain and struggles
My hand grasps theirs to hold.

We journey for a while together
Their burdens I then share
Until they find a place to rest
Until they're safe I'll care.

When they are gone I carry on
For this valley is so vast
Though my body tires I'll persevere
To finally find my rest.

Through winds and storms the dark and light
My loneliness and pain
My feet still walk enduring much
But why I can't explain.

I hit a rock and hurt my toe
I simply can't go on
I need to rest just for a while
My legs just want to go home.

As I begin to fall I hear a voice
Softly and nearby
My friend you are not alone
I'll carry you just for a while.

This journey's hard, the valley vast
Yet you've made it very far
Enduring much you carried on
Helping others all the while.

I trusted you to help them too
I knew you could endure
I walked as close as you'd allow
I saw your hurt and tears.

Long ago you saw a path
You chose to follow and see
Ahead of you I've always gone
The path you found was me.

From time to time I walked behind
Tending to those who stopped
But you I knew would carry on
Your feet would always walk.

Those shoes you wear all worn and frayed
I gave you long ago
They've made this journey before my friend
They know which way to go.

I trusted you along this path
You chose to trust in me
Those shoes I gave were mine at first
Their light is what you see.

This valley's hard, these storms are rough
These shoes will guide your feet
I'll carry you just for a while
But these shoes are yours to keep.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I was inspired a couple days ago to take the time to write again and this poem is what came out. Life has been a real struggle the past couple of years and especially the past couple months but my energy is always given to help others and try my best to make life better for them. However, it's never easy and takes a greater toll on the giver when they forget that they also need to receive. I wrote this poem to share my journey and belief of life being the journey filled with struggles, hardships, storms and trials, yet also with opportunities for friendships, learning, growth and hope.

At first the traveler is only focusing on their tiredness and pain, but as they continue along they find others who by taking the time to help, care for and show kindness to, they gain friendship, energy and the ability to continue a little further. However, each time the traveler helps another they also see what they left behind in order to continue their own journey, they realize how much of themselves they had to give in order to help the others. They begin to feel hurt, afraid and alone once more. Once the traveler stubs their toe and they simply can't go on. It's then they realize they are not alone and someone has been there helping all along. The shoes were what were guiding them, helping them persevere. They weren't there to protect the traveler from pain and hurt but to keep them on the path best for them. The shoes were a gift to help the traveler see the world in a way unique to them, to understand how to care and be cared for by others, and to find their purpose and meaning for life for themselves. Not all choose to see the shoes, or wish to continue the journey. Many stop and rest too long and yearn for what could have been. Yet, life is still a journey whether we rest or whether we walk. Our time we spend while living is all we have that's ours. For me I know these Old Frayed Shoes that I chose to take and wear will always have once belonged to another, for me it is Jesus my Christ and he gave them because he cares.
