The Mortal Transformation Poem by Arvindh Shyam Sundar

The Mortal Transformation

Water was everywhere
Engulfing me in its currents
The tight grip of the wet ropes
Stubbornly held onto my hands

The rocks tied to my feet
Were firmly pulling me down
Trying to submit my body
To the abyss of silence

I was hanging in the balance
The abyss of darkness below
And my life up above
A tug of war so unfair

My surroundings blurred
I was running out of air
Consciousness was ebbing away
While my heart was still beating

Heartbeats grew louder
In those depths of silence
I became acutely aware
Of my very existence

As everything grew dark
I felt hands pulling me up
My body grew lighter
And I felt air

After all the medical help
It was a long while
Before the ship deck settled
And I was alone again

My body rhythm tuned
To that of the rocky boat
The warmth from the sun
Was bringing my skin alive

The salty air brushed my face
And played with my hair
I am so alive to every moment
For, now I am a true mortal

And nothing was ever the same again
