The Lull-A-Bye Pacifier Poem by Joe Fraccalvieri

The Lull-A-Bye Pacifier

There in the background-- among familiar faces
where they take you-- bewildered, blind, and bound
Never sharing with you the faintest clue
Never leaving behind any traces...
Not making the slightest sound

They are There... Just beyond our imagination--
outside the focus of an eye
Unseen by some who live with us--
lost in the fading distance...
Could be why coyotes cry
They're the shadows in the darkness...
The stars of the morning sky

And they're made to keep us conscious--
to separate facts from lies--
to pry from us a promise
before this body dies

Our science had us looking for them,
billions of planets away
Inviting them to visit our world...
Who would have guessed they intended to stay!

But those of them there in the background--
the ones who remake what we've learned...
If only they knew, what we had found--
the value of knowledge is earned

What more will they take while they keep us awake...
Even bringing us back from the brink...
The realms of our dreams are useless to them
and it's no good to them if we think!

In the time that it takes them to take a deep breath--
in the instant it takes you to blink--
they'll gently lead you to the fountain of youth--
to the waters of life at the far edge of death
where the ascending shadows sink
And they'll fiercely force you to tell them the truth
as they tempt your soul with a drink
