The Lizard Poem by Mark Nichols

The Lizard

The Apostate collapses into an almost restful fallen position

She knows that she will have to be in this position
So she had used every drop of her energy
To make sure the landing was tolerable
And as sustaining as possible
She'd flown from a horse
As she and the others were passing through a woods
She had an arrow in a spot on her left
It was clean through,
tho luckily 'twas a pretty small arrow

When she'd landed she'd kept herself from
Smash-landing on that spot by kicking off a tree
Let's just say it was some serious last minute quick thinking
We can all do it
At least that's what the Apostate thought and believed.

Well, it so happened
I always wanted to say that

Well, it so happened that a lizard
Not a huge lizard
But pretty big

Way bigger than a newt
Or a gecko
And bigger than those medium-sized green ones
It was sort of smaller than a Gila monster
But quicker and faster
Almost like a small dinosaur
But sort of like a dog too
And definitely like a lizard
Pretty ugly, I guess you'd say
Until you got to know it

This lizard was a pretty macho female sort
But more identified with a maleness than a femaleness
Though all that was there in her too

Well
This story is from its perspective of this one event

Human flew off the horse kicked a tree on the way down which shot human into some fairly high grassy sort of stuff by another tree
Human falls near
Female
Hurt
I wait
Closer
Bring food
She eats
She does not see me
I launch at her
She knows I'm boss
Now I feel bad
She's scared
I prove that I move food to her
We become friends
She not doing too well
I try to bring things she needs
She's gettin' weak
She teaches me how to speak with her
We tell each other stories
Before she dies she looks at me and sings
Very beautiful song
And I see who she was every story
And she shows me what a kiss is
And I am passed all of her stories
Then part of her gets up and walks away
The rest of her is much appreciated
