The Journey Home Poem by Natalie Collins

The Journey Home

Preparing another fallen hero
For his journey home
Removing the blood-stained uniform
That he so proudly wore
Washing the lifeless body
Of the dedicated Marine
Freezing the soldier’s corpse
To preserve him for a later date
Bagging up the belongings
For the family to cherish
Choking back the tears that I’m
Not supposed to shed on this job
Feeling like a part of me
Has died along with my buddy
