The Hajj Tragedy, Mecca,2015 Poem by Eugene Levich

The Hajj Tragedy, Mecca,2015

Over 4,000 crushed or suffocated
Near the Jamarat Bridge
At Mina.
Men and woman,
Old and young,
Scholars and officials
Among them...

They had come for no reason
Other than to worship
Allah.

Accusations fly
Here and there
Questions remain unanswered
Where does blame lie?

Why didn’t Allah,
The All-Merciful,
Preserve His faithful
From deaths so horrible?

Was it because...?
Or was it because...?
Or because...?

The spirits of those lost,
Their sorrowing families,
And all humanity,
Require an answer.
