The Great Johnny Keeffe Poem by Francis Duggan

The Great Johnny Keeffe

I remember Johnny Keeffe in his physical prime
Though this is going back many decades in time
As a young man he was handsome and athletic and tall
And for Millstreet and Cork he played Gaelic Football

A down to earth man for one of such a great name
Who did remain humble despite his sporting fame
One of Ireland's finest Gaelic Football defenders when he was at his best
Never found to be wanting when put to the test

For the Millstreet Tidy Town committee him and his late lovely wife Lena their part they did play
On helping to make Millstreet the beautiful Town that it is today
Sad to know that the gift of life from Lena has gone
But Johnny perhaps in his nineties in Millstreet Town happy and healthy and is living on.

For Cork and for Millstreet great games he did play
The great Johnny Keeffe remains a living legend today
A famous Gaelic Footballer in his physical prime
Though this is going back many decades in time.
