The Great Aboriginal Flag Poem by Francis Duggan

The Great Aboriginal Flag

The pride of Australia's first people here's something of which we can brag
Red and black with a big moon of yellow the great Aboriginal flag
It should be the flag of Australia with the stars of the Southern Cross
That we tend to overlook Indigenous history and culture for us all seems such a sad loss.

Red and yellow for the sun and the land and black for the people how proudly it toss in the breeze
On this beautiful day in the Autumn with a high of near thirty degrees
The pride of Australia's first people but as a flag it does not take pride of place
The National flag of Australia is not of the Aboriginal race.

The Aboriginal population is dwindling and their culture we fail to embrace
But they have a proud ancient lineage that to the Dreamtime they can trace
Yet their's is not the flag of Australia of this marvellous Southern Land
To them that must seem quite insulting when respect should be theirs to command.

The flag of Australia's first people a flag one does not often see
In the gentle wind displaying it's colours on the flagpost in the park by the sea
It should be the flag of Australia for Political discussion some fuel
But that is never going to happen so much for majority rule.
