The Graying Surgeon And Other Experts. Poem by Hindukush Ojha

The Graying Surgeon And Other Experts.

The graying surgeon and other experts- a poem by Hindukush Ojha

Watching the drama of the world unfold
To the manifold mind's stories being told,
About the incredible niceties that govern
the good,
Being similar to the foibles that dictate the bad,
Both good and bad being flip sides of a coin.
You are only as good as the bad you could be
In the youth, for you to think this, you had little basis,
But now you can, you have traveled this far
As a fifty plus.

For example, the experts in all walks of life
From doctors to actors, from plumbers to politicians
And so on and so forth,
The essence of people also
Emanates from how long they have been on life's stage
For if they are all young they have yet to learn
What was not taught by the book or teachers,
Which is what is taught through age
For God wants to decorate,
With a medal of experience,
Those who work consistently!

It is a prize not equated with worldly goods
That can be bought with money,
The doctor, or the politician, or the lawyer
Or the old restaurateur in town,
Whose services you beseech
To be sure of the vintage you want to down
Are sought by the discerning
Who seek the experience
And the quiet confidence
Of these graying experts.

This experience takes
Precedence over the novelty
Of life's happening things,
It is a wisdom which is priceless
Not the intelligent latest gadgets for me
Nor an artificial veneer of solidity
That comes with newer models
Of men and machines.

The very old, even if rendered
Rusted with disuse,
Cannot be relegated to obscurity,
But if oiled and chaffed
Can be kept bristled,
Like the quintessential machines,
Up to action, like the recoil of a spring,
Whose metal shall never lose memory
If such are the products of solid
Workmanship!
They never disappoint
And always
Rise up to the occasion,
In any exigency!
