The Goat Poem by Alex Fischer

The Goat

I awake to a noise just outside my door
Some kind of knocking, the knocking of horns on my door
“What is the beast knocking on my door, knocking on my door with its horns? ” asked I
The beast did not reply
“Answer me I say! What beast disturbs me during the darkness of my days? ! ”
No answer came forth from the beast
“Do you mock me you vile fiend! I’ll let you in if you answer me! ”
I swung, and I flung, and I threw open the door, only to reveal a Goat
Only to reveal a Goat who Quoth “Soul”
It sounded like a man, but also like a beast
Its horns twisted circularly
The teeth were sharp but not very long
Only about the size of the tip of a pen,
That’s all

Astounded by its speech and stunned by its arrive
I moved backward towards my chair and took a seat
The Goat moved forward, maybe two feet
“What do you want, you intruding beast? !
Can’t you see that I’m in great grief? ”
The Goat said nothing but just one thing
Quoth the Goat “Soul”
“Soul! Why do you want my Soul? If you do, go ahead! Take what remains! There is nothing left for me anymore! ”
The Goat shook its head, horns moving stiff
Quoth the Goat “66,666 Souls”

“What is this, a number to take? Or a number you have already reached today? ”
The Goat did not answer, it stood still and stayed
“Answer me! Why do you not answer me? !
Are you afraid? What is it that you want?
Is your life at stake? ”
The Goat shook his head, nothing did he say
He jumped on my bed, there did he lay
Quoth the Goat “Soul”

“Who sent you? Was it God? Was it Satan?
Fate above! What have you spaken?
What other lives have you taken? Dare ye take mine? So I can suffer to the end of time? ! ”
The Goat shook his head and then he said
“Yes it is sad for me to say, but your Soul belongs to me this day! ”
The Goat did leap upon the ground with his feet, or hooves whatever he might bare this week

“No! No! I will not go with thee this day!
Nor any other day! My Soul is not for thee to take! Leave me alone today is not my day!
Let me grieve over the love that I have lost this day! ”
Quoth the Goat “Soul”

“If it is Soul you want thou ghastly Ghoul! Than go! Go! Leave and take with ye my Soul! ”
I yelled at the beast as it drew a long face and didst say to me
“I would takest thy Soul, if thou were not but a Ghoul, yet ghouls have no Souls, and therefore would be a droll.”
So with that the Goat didst leave me alone, yet I swear that I saw it yesterday, and I swear I heard it say “Soul”
Yet what do I know, I am just a wandering Ghoul
