The Empty House Poem by Daniel Brick

The Empty House

Rating: 5.0

Inspired by a website with a Name
and a Photograph, but no Poems

Everything was made ready!
There was a niche to hold five poems,
inviolate, polished, no trace of
former occupants, dust free. But already
the space is sullied because no poems
keep decay from creeping inside.
Without the protection of words,
even sacred places decline, admit
the world haphazardly, abandon
their mission...

Imagine a family of poems
within this house. Imagine how
dead silence will be punctuated
by the best words in the best order.
How the poems will read each other
and rejoice in their common origin
in your heart. Imagine a wanderer,
almost bereft of hope, who enters
the empty house in search of mere
shelter, but finds instead your
human speech. Oh, how it will
restore him! He will be human
among human things. That is
your mission ....

What a marvellous poem. Any revisit to these pages remind us of the loss that Daniel is no more!

Those last 14 lines absolutely should be memorialized on the front page of every literature textbook in the world! The metaphor is stunning and draws the reader inside where he seeks poems that speak to each other about grand journeys over all the frontiers of human thought and desire and endeavor. Daniel, you never cease to amaze me with your word palette and your idea palette blended together by that fabulous pen of your! 10+++++++++++

Susan, I'm totally in agreement with Dillip on this one. Personally, it's always been such a great pleasure to read both your poetry and your commentary. The same holds true for me re: Daniel Brick!

When I saw all those empty POEMHUNTER sites, all set up and then abandoned by people who live in my hometown, I just had to write a poem to deal with my disappointment. But as I wrote it changed from being a querulous, accusing poem to this tongue-in-cheek celebration. I lite a candle rather than cursing the darkness! !

What a wonderful description of missed poetic opportunity, dead silence cannot be kept in order without a full house, great poem
