The Easy Way Out Poem by Dorothy (Alves) Holmes

The Easy Way Out

His letter read
Like the chorus
Of a country and western song.
He said, 'I am sorry baby and I know
I have done you wrong! '
He continued, 'I apologize for stealing
Your heart, and dumping it in a field
Where unfinished dreams waste away,
But I can't help myself, and I've got
To leave this town and get away from your tantalizing eyes,
That see right through my soul with every thoughtless lie.
So this is my sad good-bye and believe me it breaks my heart,
But I've got to travel along and get a brand new start.

Oh how those words did hurt and made me fall apart,
What good is this empty heart You have tossed aside.
I wondered why you didn't take me along for the ride.
You know I love you I wailed and
I called your name out loud, crying like a baby
Forgetting about my pride.

'Good-bye little darling you scribbled,
It seemed in haste,
With hearts and every x meant a kiss
Suggesting I would soon get over this.
With one drop of ink shaped like a tear
Where you had signed your name,
Somehow I knew, it would never
Be the same.
