The Day... Poem by Ifegwu Victor

The Day...

Waoh!

The day we have all looked up to
many with excitement
others apprehensively

The day we know will surely come
in the history of our nationhood
no matter how many times we choose to jega it

The day we have all prayed for
planned for
and worked for

the day many have talked of
others have sang off
while others choose to fight off

it is the day when we will
across all boards
decide who and why
he should be in Aso

it is the day
in which our differences
will be unified
despite the outcome

it is the day we will decide
whether the umpire
is really of this empire

it is the day we will decide
whether he resign
or stay on after may 29

the day we will decide
between democracy
and gerontocracy

The day we will choose
among them all
the best of all
to lead us all
for the next four...

yes, it is the day we decide
and if another day comes after
then we must also decide
between
Federation...
Confederation...
and independenceS
...which is better.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I was inspired to write the poem 'The Day' on March 28th,2015- the day Nigeria went to the polls to vote in its 5th elected president. The day Nigeria made history as the first time there was a transference of power at the center from the ruling party to the opposition.

In the buildup to this election, many were of the opinion that it will be the bloodiest, the deadliest, the one that may break up the country into splinter nations... but, months after that day, Nigeria is still one, building on the gains of the most freest and peaceful election in its history.
