The Chorus Of Birds Poem by Paula Glynn

The Chorus Of Birds

Birds of great size
To be the extinct elephant bird
A Madagascar bird
Whose closest living relative in the kiwi
These birds to become extinct 300 years ago
To exceed 3 metres in height
Even though they had pride
Another bird - a Brontornis -
To be a carnivore
Among other birds
Such as the tallest bird
Being the Giant Moa
Part of the Moa bird family
To go extinct in New Zealand 1500 CE
For reasons not known,

Other such birds to be the Ostrich,
Emu, Emperor Penguin
The Mute Swan
The Great Bustard
The King Penguin
The Wandering Albatross
Whooper Swan
Dalmatian Pelican
And Andean Condor
And many, many other birds,
Bred from captivity
And ancestors of birds,
Now extinct
For reasons only known
As pollution and hunting
And the destruction of the rainforests
Humans affecting our bird population
Whether birds of prey
Or birds in suburbia,

Those suburban birds
To keep the wildlife thriving
To control bugs
And to keep the environment
Natural as possible
This planet surviving
For our garden birds, too
Need our help,

Many to put out bird feeders,
With food of mealworms
Seeds and nuts
Our garden birds
Types to be food
Shown by a study in England
The abundance of garden birds
When feeders put in the back yard
And birds thrive in winter, too
For every little bird needs its food
Just as any animal

Birds by species to be
Finches, Siskin, Jays,
Hummingbirds, Sunbirds
White-Eyes
Barbets and Thrushes
To eat fresh and cut fruit
Red Kites to eat meat scraps
On the other side of the globe
Australia carnivorous birds
To eat mince
Such as Australia Magpies
And Kookaburras,

Birds all over the globe
Some carnivore
Others eating bugs
Like the Orange Crowned
Warblers, Golden Crowned Kinglets
And Northern Flickers
In Texas woodpeckers to
Use a suet feeder all year round
To its young and to its
Neighbouring birds
Their singing always heard,

With help from people
Suburban birds to survive
Whether in winter
Or in general
So put out your bird feeder
And see the birds flock
Even crows to Robin Red Breasts
To Starlings and to Pigeons
The pigeon the famous bird
Of every city in the world
Although seen as vermin
They still reside among people,

And remind us all
How the chorus of bird song
In every wood, forest,
Houses, trees and everywhere else
Makes you realize
The importance of the average bird
And how birds belong
For without birds,
There'd be only silence
And bare, lonely woods
No owls, no eagles
No nothing,
For Mother Nature
Is the goal
And protecting our birds
Means protecting our planet,
For generations of people,
To look in awe at our birds
And appreciate earth,
The only planet where life flourishes,
Like the rainforest after the rain.
