The Brief Stopover.... Poem by RIC BASTASA

The Brief Stopover....

there is another day to make our day alive.
poetry could be one, or poetry could be the most viable one.
it comes as we wake up, sits beside us by the window and with its young eyes it makes us see a beautiful world: its finger points to the sea which we have taken for granted as just the sea.
it says it is more than human but we lack the word to give it the life we have.
it is beyond gender, beyond right and wrong, beyond religion even.
it takes pride that it has seen God which we all failed to see.
it humbles itself saying, it failed and it does not elaborate but in the face of poetry we see a happy face, a genuine smile,
a set of pearly teeth, and a gentle tongue.
we ask it for some reasons and it shows its heart
burning with fire but never consumed by it.
and then we stop and tell it, i will be working today to earn my keep.
and we leave it, there by the window, and in a while it is gone too.
like a mist, leaving nothing, not even a sigh,
no mark, no nothing.
the open window keeps us wondering about the beauty of this world but somehow we must leave this house behind and gently too close the door leaving no consolation for its brief stay.
