The Aussie Redneck Say Poem by Francis Duggan

The Aussie Redneck Say

True Aussie don't eat kangaroo or rice or pitta bread
That's what the redneck Aussie say the Aussie born and bred
On barbecued steaks in bread rolls and on grilled steaks men are fed
That's why in sports us Aussies of all others are ahead.

Those who drink cappucinos are from Lands far away
True Aussies never drink such stuff the Aussie redneck say
'Twas not champagne or port wine that made us men to fear
But Tooheys, Coopers and Fosters the best of Aussie beer.

Lawn bowls, croquet and bingo few Aussies ever play
Such games are for non natives for migrants old and gray
But at Rugby League and Cricket and Aussie Rules Football
Us Aussies lead the World in the greatest games of all.

True Aussies are not highbrows mate for we are men apart
You won't see us in galleries staring at works of art
And you won't hear us talk of famed artists or of poetic greats
We play pool at our local and drink beer with our mates

You may be Australian born and raised and to your Country's
flag be true
And you may feel that there is no more Australian than you
But if you don't drink beer with your mates and talk about football
To the Aussie redneck you are not an Aussie after all.
