The Adulteress Poem by Jack Worthington

The Adulteress

Seven years ago a vow was made
Even then, she seemed quite afraid
Concerned her hair stayed in its braid
On that morning before the day began to fade.

A year went in and a year went out
Then another without so much as a pout
And then a third, with our daughter born
Not long after our love seemed worn.

The fourth year I gave my best
As if cramming for a test
To please this soul attached to me
The baby balanced on my knee.

Year five came with ice and left me cold
My mind began to wander, my hand began to fold
She hugged the far side of the bed
Perched on a cliff and full of dread.

Six was brutal from the start
No more words came from her heart
There were no fights just stoney silence
No longer touching me, just definace.

The final year revealed our fate
On a business trip out of state
I called her cell in the afternoon
Her lover answered, she left that June.
