The Abyss Poem by Eric Paeplow

The Abyss

There I stood, the edge of the endless abyss before me
For what seemed an eternity I stood, searching....waiting for the answer
Peering into the darkness, motionless, timeless, silently I stood
Wanting to know, yet fearing the answer, waiting to be enlightened

Time passed, the wind drifted over me like an everlasting wave
Yet I stood, peering into the eternal abyss…silently I waited
Many dreams played out before my eyes, wide open to the world before me
Eager was I to know the unknowable, eager for the answers to it all

Still I waited, still I stood, silent, motionless, an eternity it seemed
Yet the answers never came, only the endless wind, now a pounding wave
Doubting, dreaming, waiting, wishing...the time passing on
Was I ever to know the answer, was there ever even an answer to be known

Still I stood, still I waited, now engulfed by the gale
Am I here, is the abyss merely a dream...I wondered
Eternal days spent staring into the darkness, searching for the answers
I fear lead me not to enlightenment, but to madness...
