That's Exactly How Poem by Kerri White

That's Exactly How

If everything happened
exactly as you want it to,
would you even know what that might be?

Or would it confuse you;
twist you up inside,
like it's doing to you right now?

If your plans unfolded
right before your eyes
do you think you could honestly recognize them?

Will there ever be a time
I can ask you questions such as these
and get a response other than hateful self-destruction?

It's ironic for us both
to be in the same situation
but need two different outcomes so badly

You need time to slow down
so you can catch your breath;
maintain your composure-
for some reason, you believe it'll hurt a little less to just deny it all...

I need that same time to speed up
so I can smile again with the least bit of sincerity
and so you'll know when I look at you
that I'm not thinking about anything else except you.

I don't need that for you.
I need that for me,
and just because you're wrapped inside
doesn't mean any move I make will ever be for you.

I think we both feel
the exact same things,
but you cover it up in fear
and I spew it all out like it actually helps anything.

You won't let yourself get there
and I'm not stopping myself.
If only you knew you're just as capable of hurting me as you think I am of you.

One thing remains
the common median between
your time as it slows down
and mine as it speeds up
means we're right back to how things are right now
60 seconds in a minute. No more. No less
And I'm okay with that 'cause that's exactly how it's supposed to be.
