Thanks For Our Election, And Several Spiritual Gifts Poem by Rees Prichard

Thanks For Our Election, And Several Spiritual Gifts

O Lord, my God most high!
Say, by what means can I
Thy praise at large display,
And my due thanks repay?

Ere th' universe was made,
Or its foundations laid,
Thou grace to me hadst given,
To be a son of heaven.

From dust thou gav'st me birth,
When but a clod of earth,
And with thy form didst grace
A creature vile and base.

Forth from my mother's womb
I did uninjur'd come,
When I might thence have came
A cripple, maim'd and lame.

Thou didst the favour give
I with thy saints shou'd live,
Whereas I might as well
With Jews been doom'd to dwell:

And when to Satan sold,
For Adam's fault of old,
From hell's sulphureous flood
Thou sav'dst me through Christ's blood:

Nor didst thou, for me, spare
Thine only Son and heir,
But gavest him to lie
Upon the cross, and die.

Thou didst me then renew,
(Such favour thou didst shew!)
To be thy child once more,
Although the fiend's before.

A Father, thou to me,
I then a son to thee,
And, in thy image bright,
Became an heir of light.

Thou calld'st me, O Lord!
By thy celestial Word
And by thy Holy Spirit,
Salvation to inherit -

Thou called'st me aloud,
From the dull, drunken crowd,
From the blind heathen throng,
To live thy saints among.

In Christ's blood purify'd,
And fully sanctify'd,
A ray thou gavest me
Of thy Divinity.

Though in a wretched case,
Though all my works were base,
Thou sav'dst me, when undone,
Through faith, in thy dear Son.

Thou gav'st me hopes, that I,
At th' angel's aweful cry,
Though dead in flesh, shou'd rise,
And soar above the skies:

And shou'd, for Jesus' sake,
of endless bliss partake,
And the immense reward,
For saints, above prepar'd:

Where I shall meet with peace,
And joys that never cease,
With honour and respect,
And bliss, without defect.

For all those graces given,
I'll laud the Lord of heav'n,
His praises I'll proclaim,
And glorify his name:

I'll constantly adore,
And praise him evermore,
For his great lenity,
And goodness shewn to me.

Be all due honours paid,
To him, the world, who made -
To him, who sav'd it, lost,
And to the Holy Ghost!
Amen.
