Sumptuous Temples Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

Sumptuous Temples

In the sumptuous temples
That hide
Over the hills
Amidst the jungle crowds
Arise fires
Arise scents
Arise sighs of
Ardent desires.

The vestal virgins
Lie
And
The moon dimly
Shines.

Giant columns
Rise
The monks
Hit
Hard
Cymbals
Occasionally.

And
The earth trembles.

The waters of beauty
In a scent of the suns
Burn themselves.

THE WATERS OF BEAUTY IN THE SCENT OF SUNS BURN THEMSELVES - Wow! I'm sure there is a name for the verse technique you used in that stanza. Whatever it's called it worked to bring not so much closure to the poem as to pull a veil over it, so the ritual can continuie in the imagination. It's curious I just came from INNER TEMPLES which uses the biblical orgy of the GOLDEN CALF to identify our human failings when we erect a false god to excuse our sins and failings. But this poem is not symbolic or allegorical. It is rather a vivid recreation of a pagan ritual. It is an objective artistic portrayal of ancient rites like Stravinsky's RITE OF SPRING. And just as alluring and terrrifying at the same time.

Aloha Emmanuel... I am there my friend... I sense the mystique, and have held that unmentionable sacrificial blade in my hands... and tasted the fear of the brides to be... awesome representation of the sensuous and eerily macabre...I salute you! All of the best from this life, to you, and all of your relations... Michaelw1two.
