Spring Awakening Poem by Raymond Farrell

Spring Awakening

Out of this winter
Will gush forth
Spring
The pores of the earth
Will open under the sun's heat
And dormant seeds
Will awaken and sprout
To push up
Towards the sun
It has been long in coming
Days have felt like weeks
For months my spirit
Has been in hibernation
But now the blood is quickening
The longer days
Give a sense Spring is coming
I look for a sign
To confirm my feelings
Perhaps a crocus
In the front bed
Or two robins
Performing their courtship ritual
I must know for sure
Spring has arrived
Before I turn my hope loose
So I anxiously watch and wait
For the return of the barn swallows
The day I see them
On the hydro line
I will know
Spring has finally arrived.
