Spaceman X Poem by Paula Glynn

Spaceman X

The first view of blue and green earth in orbit
Dreaming of travelling through the universe
Spaceman X feels tremendous excitement
Knowing that his highly advanced spaceship
Is finally taking him through
The mysterious and strange universe

The spaceship has its clocks
Continue running through
Universe space and time
The echoes of dark matter
The echoes of dark energy
Telling the story of the universe

To see the universe back in time
When all matter was condensed unto one
When the energy of strange something
Decided it would expand beyond imagination
And create galaxies and stars and planets
And eventually creating life-giving earth

Spaceman X having learnt from textbooks
Then learning to fly airplanes
Then learning to fly spaceships
His pilot expertise and experience incredible
His qualifications and practice invaluable
His knowledge and intelligence protecting lives

Leaving earth's atmosphere and orbit
Spaceman X navigates up, down, left and right
The directions of space travel four dimensional
While travelling through the solar system
Spaceman X passes by Jupiter, Mars
Venus, Saturn, other planets and hostile moons

With no agenda to land on these impossible
Planets and moons: temperature and gravity
That would destroy any spaceship
That tried to land: gravity to completely crush
No human spaceship to make that mistake
Where planets and moons even aliens would avoid

Light years pass: nothing faster than light
Not even a spaceship even fast enough
Spaceman X having it tough
Knowing auto-pilot not a good idea
At least when he doesn't sleep
In a specially designed space bed

Spaceman X to often miss days and nights
But he always knew when that airplane
Soared into the air, taking flight
Space travel for him was right
His heart's desire to explore the universe
And to be like a character on Star Trek

Still: sometimes Spaceman X
Would long for a cup of coffee in the morning
And a cup of tea in the afternoon
And to feel the grass under his feet
And feel the summer sun on his face
That sacrifice he made to advance the human race

Although fiction, Star Trek to amaze audiences
And to inspire a new generation
To take to the stellar skies
To be spaceman X that flies
Through the hostile vacuum of outer space
And live a life that is trip the light fantastic.
