Southern Ukraine Poem by Ivan Malkovych

Southern Ukraine

The spirit of Cimmerian silver
and furs has not withered here,
the quiet dignity of these
majestic women has not faded.

An unquenched earthy lust
rushes through them like a wild river.
Look: regiments of brave warriors
grow in their wombs.

I know what land this is,
I know what rule prevailed here:
these women still possess
the spirit of matriarchy.

Translation: 2000, Bohdan Boychuk and Myrosia Stefaniuk
