Sometimes Poem by David Olughu

Sometimes

Sometimes I wish I was a flower,
I'll attract all and sundry
with enticing fragrance and essence.
No one will hate me.

Sometimes I wish I was a bird,
so I could fly into the air
once the Earth ceased to give me comfort.
No one would force me.

Sometimes I wish I was the moon,
I'll rest all day, only to come out at night
and be a light unto people's path.
I'll be loved by all.

Sometimes I wish I was an ant,
so little but with strength
to carry ten times my weight.
I'll fear no one.

Sometimes I wish I was a tree,
swaying unconditionally
to the biddings of the wind.
No one will bother me.

Sometimes I wish I was the sun,
so I could beautify the mornings and evenings
but scorch the noon.
No one will try me.

Sometimes I wish I was fire,
so I could burn
whatever and whoever I desire.
I'll command authority.

Sometimes I wish I was grass,
to feed some
and be a bed for all.
I'll help everyone.

Sometimes I wish I was a star,
to bring joy to the dark sky
and decorate the night.
My presence will always be soothing.

Sometimes I wish I was a waterfall,
cascading down a mountain side
and crash into myself at the bottom.
I'll be beautiful.

Nevertheless, I am human,
made in a spirit's likeness
and chosen to rule.
I am all in one.
