Soldier's Surprise Poem by Ronald Chapman

Soldier's Surprise

Rating: 5.0

Like everyday now,
For almost a year.
I wake up at dawn to
Scorn my lonely bed.
I look at your beloved pictures on
The night stands.
Then I say,
"It's time to get the kids ready for school dear."

I'm in the kitchen,
Getting our children's lunches
Ready for school.
While cooking breakfast.
I yell, "Come on kids, You're going to be late for school."
My youngest son walks in.
As he has done for almost a year.
Asks, "When is daddy coming home from overseas? '
Holding back my sea of lonely tears.
I answer him. "I don't know dear.
"I hope so soon, wiping my tears away."

With dishes washed and their lunches made.
I get the kid's made up and dressed in their warm coats.
I grab my car keys, and yell, let's go kids.

I open the door and see a familiar face.
As I faint into your arms,
I ask, "Is that really you dear? "
