Sleeplessness Poem by George Capron

Sleeplessness

SLEEPLESSNESS

The night is arduous and long.
I try to sleep. I cannot.
The weight of the world is strong.
As it hangs about my head
There is no sleep, so, I try to
Write instead.

Time it seems suspended
But I know it is not so.
As morn approaches, the darkness
Will soon go
I toss and turn and yearn for sleep
Tomorrow, it comes too soon

Then sleep overtakes me
For an hour or so
I awake, burnt out with a
Heavy head, unable to go
As sleep overtakes in spurts,
It leaves me listless and inert.

Lord knows how it hurts.
As I sit nodding away,
Through the bright light of day
What causes this shift?
I will never know.
I sit and nod while I wish
It were not so.
