She Won'T Return For To Live In The High Country Poem by Francis Duggan

She Won'T Return For To Live In The High Country

A young woman from the Victorian-New South Wales border the high country where the snowy waters flow
And she is new to the big southern city and the urban way of life she gets to know
And she feels homesick for the snowy mountains 300 kilometres north of Melbourne if not more
And It has been known that for people to feel home sick they do not have to leave their native shore.

She could have stayed up there in the high country where career opportunities are so few
And she could have stayed and worked on her father's farm or found work as a local jilleroo
An expert horse woman she can muster cattle and she can lasso, Tie up and brand a steer
But a new direction in life for her is now the challenge and her future is in the city 'twould appear.

She has found love south of her beloved mountains where the snowy waters flow eternally
Down from the highlands through the flat brown country on it's long journey to the sourthern sea
Her husband is an urban born and raised fellow and to him she is a good and a loving wife
And their unborn baby in her womb is stirring she has in her the gift of a new life.

She won't return for to live in the high country where the snowy waters will flow forever more
Down from the highlands through the flatter country on it's long journey to the ocean shore
And though she will remember the high country she is in the city now for the long stay
And in the city she will raise her children and in the city she'll grow old and gray.
