Shallow Water (A Song) Poem by Jade Leven

note: this song is about how shallow people can be. I wrote it for this guy that I used to like who I recently found out is very shallow.

it's so cliche of me to say
but I feel like a real California girl
staying up late with nothing to wait for
not a care in the world

it's so very clear that I belong here
at least for this moment in time
the boys give me their 10-cent opinions
and I never hesitate to hand over my last dime

but beyond this simple world of mine
there is something I never had
the one thing that I need to find

if I admit that I need you now
will you please go back to sleep?
if I admit that I miss you now
will you make me believe
that an ocean or a heart could be this deep
in southern California?

they say, alright, this summer's gonna be tight
and I laugh and go along with that story
they think they understand me, but could they handle me?
could they ever feel anything for me?

we've made our way into these endless days
he knows that I've been thinking about him
I want him, it's true, and he knows it, too
but does he know that I would be just fine without him?

beyond this simple crush
beyond this mindless rush
is there something inside that fingers can't touch

I breathe in, I breathe out
with each word comes more doubt
name any girl you want, and you've basically got her
it's not deep here anymore
my feet can almost touch the floor
and tell me, how can you live your life in all of this shallow water
