Serenity Poem by Agnes Clark

Serenity

Can we believe, against all disbelief,
against the evidence of all our senses,
that underneath our wearinss and grief,
our shattered peace and trembling defenses,
there is a tideless sea that shines with gems
of phosphorus, and pearls from treasure-trove,
expanse devoid of inlets, ripples, hems,
whose molecules are essences of love?

Perhaps one day the unstained parts of us
will slowly, gently drift upon its water,
dissolve into the wide, harmonious
substratum, and refind lost silver laughter.
Can we believe, knowing life's agony,
that underneath is pure serenity?
