Sea Urchin Poem by Sergio Savioli

Sea Urchin

sea urchin

island sea urchin

urchin that's a little purple

urchin that's a little grey

urchin so perfect

so matchless

so elusive no one can possess

it pops up in the deep turquoise blue

of my mind where I grasp it

but only briefly

it disappears inexorably

in that constantly lapping current of waves

that cradles my all too real dreams

leaving me dazed like a seagull

hit by gusts of wind crying his dismay...

until I realise that maybe after all

I am really just a stone on the sea bed

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The carless Croatian island of Unije, summer 2014. Many readers have written to me asking why, of all things, I had to fall in love with a sea urchin. Why couldn't I have taken a fancy to a starfish, a little sea horse or even a clam? I answer with the Italian expression 'al cuore non si commanda' - the heart cannot be ruled.
