Schone Bertha

Ik kende ooit een vrouw
die zong 'Oranje boven'
maar ik kan je beloven
van onder was ze rood.

ik kende ooit een vrouw
zo blond als ochtend zonnen
verzonken in diep blauw
berouw dat kreeg ik gauw.

ik kende ooit een vrouw
ze had twee ronde kazen
ze deed ieder verbazen
ze nam het niet zo nauw.

ze reed zelfs met wat bazen
en wierp die zomaar weg
niets kon mij verbazen
dat bloempje van me zeg.

Ach schone Bertha, 'ja'
doet ieders hart verzuchten
aan haar was geen onvluchten
gelukkig had ik pech.

zelfs mij nam ze al grazend
verloren langs de weg..

I AM not One who much or oft delight
To season my fireside with personal talk.--
Of friends, who live within an easy walk,
Or neighbours, daily, weekly, in my sight:
