Running On Empty Poem by Alexander Downie

Running On Empty

Look out at a sunny day and hide inside,
rejecting offers of closeness and feel shame.
Put on your best new life false façade,
smile at the kind voices and drift away in pain.

Spend what little you have left trying to feel,
cluttering minutes, hours and days with nothing real.
No direction, no will, no comfort, no sense of self,
Hide further from harm, hoping, waiting to find you.
