Rhymersnowadays Poem by Francis Duggan

Rhymersnowadays

In literature it did have it's fashionable time
But most of the twenty first century literary critics are dismissive of rhyme
They simply dismiss it as mere doggerel
Just ordinary jingle of literature's never do well

It is true that few things in life does ever last
And rhyme it is seen as a thing of the past
A literary form that is easy to write
And easy to memorize and to recite

We are in the era of the blank verse poet
The literary critics see their sort as worthy of literary note
And though rhyme as a literary form does live on
The days of the rhymer are in the long gone

Though nowadays in pubs we have the sing along
As a hark back to the days of old ballad and song
But rhyme as a poetic form seems all but dead
Without much hope of recovery in the years ahead

Rhyme was quite popular up to five decades ago
But what used to be it is no longer so
A new breed of poets the literary critics celebrate
And rhymers nowadays are seen as out of date.
