Return

After Esternome's shock
amongst the remains of the 30,000
killed by the eruption on Martinique,

sugary,
sometimes nutty,
sometimes vari-flavored
given dairy-milk
of late December-early January -
even mint -

my shock
at the first taste
of the return to my favorite -
90 percent Lindt.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Esternome is a character in Patrick Chamoiseau's 1992 novel 'Texaco'. He is the first on the scene after the volcano's eruption in 1902. I was reading the section describing the state of the bodies when I thought of the return to 90% Lindt after the gift chocolates from Xmas.

Picture: St Pierre, Martinique before and after eruption.
