Remembrance Poem by Beatrice Preti

Remembrance

I see the tears my country cries
Behind my sunglass-shaded eyes
While trees ignite in pompous flames
Our lives will never be the same
The flags are lowered all around
Waving inches from the ground
People pass and bow their heads
A moment of silence for the dead
They never thought this could be us
Inside a country built on trust
But times have changed, and so must we
Standing strong so we stay free
The flag above waves white and red
Strength and courage through our dread
White is hope when colours combine
All our lives are intertwined
Red is the blood in each of our veins
A life force of millions never to be drained
When we stand together, we can be strong
We'll find the courage to stand and move on
And though we still mourn, our grief helps us see
A future worth saving, for both you and me
