Remember, I Tried. Poem by David N. Munene

Remember, I Tried.

When whatever happens happens, my darling,
Please remember me as:
The lover who gave it his all to love you and failed
The man who wanted your body and yours only,
But could never really get you to get attracted to him
The hubby that wanted to make love to you and you alone,
But was never able to keep you wanting him and him alone
The body and spirit that oh so desired to be forever faithful to you
But failed to learn how to handle rejection and no from you
The one that wanted to be your one and not just your number one
But could only succeed in making you the one,
And not having you have me as the one

Henceforth, you are free,
Although I may never really be free
I have to flee to free myself
From wanting you and having you intermittently
Please remember that I tried
Remember that I gave it my all
But the dejection from your constant restriction and rejection,
Brought me crumbling into near-depression
And shrunk me into sexual obsession

I became:
A flying, restless bird out of breath that forgot how to perch
Let alone how to nest
A kite thrown off balance in the winds amidst high tide
Without compass and sense of direction
A dagger stuck deep into an oak trunk desiring to be free
And knowing that any pulling out will break it
A vicious shark trapped in a fishing tank
Fighting to free itself all too aware of inevitable bruising
Yet, free it must be and frees the net by being free itself.

Remember,
I tried.
I did.
