Pretty Pills & Promises Poem by Robert Mahoney

Pretty Pills & Promises

We have come to rely too heavily
On pretty pills and promises
That no one ever keeps
Breaking down defenses with
A high so nice, so hard to stop
Despite the ticking of the clock

None of this is working now,
I’m breaking down, I’ve fallen out
I need someone to take me by the hand
Come lead me, lead me from this hell
I need someone who really understands
To save me, save me from myself

Never stopped to wonder what it was
I’m really running from
I never really cared
I’ve lost the man I thought I was
And contemplate the trigger of this gun
I guess I’m just so scared

None of this is working now,
I’m breaking down, I’ve fallen out
I need someone to take me by the hand
Come lead me, lead me from this hell
I need someone who really understands
To save me, save me from myself

So tell me, if you can, what am I running from?
When the pills and lies no longer work
Why am I still staring down the barrel of this gun?
I could swear I’m only getting worse…
Why am I running again?
Why am I running again?

None of this is working now,
I’m breaking down, I’ve fallen out
I need someone to take me by the hand
Come lead me, lead me from this hell
I need someone who really understands
To save me, save me from myself

Baby if you hear me, please,
Come help me save myself
