Poem 39, Goodbye, Old Friend, Goodbye

I knew it when I heard you cough,
When your saliva was a bloody froth
I knew it then, that your time was near
I knew…just what I had to do was clear

I know you’ve aged and good times we’ve had
It’s memories that will always make me sad
Yet those memories will drive me on
Whether my path be right or wrong

It’s wrong and cruel to make you stay
As your thread of life continues to fray
I’d never ask you to live in pain
For my own and selfish gain.

I want you to know as you drift to sleep
That I won’t be the only one to weep
I’ll remember you always and see your smile
And I’ll see you again, dear pup, in a while…
