Passing Strangera Poem by Ibn Ali

Passing Strangera

If I should pass you on some busy street
On some sunny day
On somebody's arm
I'd walk past
Eyes cast everyway but yours
Fumbling my phone
You'd rummage through your purse
Pretending not to see
Forgetting all the lines that were rehearsed
Incase we ever met
How quickly we forget
Strange
A bird in flight cannot perceive it's fall
From height
And as we pass each other by
No less than seven strides
You scent trails behind you like a cape
The end of which I caught
A drowning man's last gulp before the waves collapse
And none would ever guess
The extent to which I knew
Where to touch
What to say
You're an instrument I played
And you've never been so expertly plucked
Fast forward to today
Imagine if I stopped
Muscle memory move these lips again
In a form well known
They shape to call you name
Your nervous chatter makes you seem a thief caught
Awkward exchanges
We are each other's past
Familiar strangers
Tonight belongs to you
The smile is one you drew
Signed with a pseudonym
But still I recognise it's you
Why speak when there's nothing left to say
