Painful Dance Poem by DiAnne Douglass

Painful Dance

An intense burning desire
A feeling never felt before
A need so sharp it almost hurts
How to describe this foreign feeling?
Listening to this music pounding in my head
Foreign and strange, words that make no sense
But a beat that commands me to dance
A need so sharp it almost hurts
An intense burning desire
To move, my body performing sensual acts I’ve only dreamed of doing
A need so sharp it almost hurts
To get up and move to this song
A foreign tongue commanding my body
Better than any lover or friend ever has
This aching sensation in my heart
Can it ever be explained properly?
The burden of the blessed and cursed
Those with the creative souls
Burning to be unleashed one way or another
Awkward movements grow confident as the music continues
Perhaps one day I will dance this way for another audience
Until then, only the words on this page will bear witness to this dance
