Only One Poem by Patti Masterman

Only One

There is only one person
Out of the whole of the world,
Who would get the gist of the words-
But he is sleeping now, and later when he awakens
He must go to work, and make the bank deposit,
To do the car repairs; maybe work the crossword puzzle
In his down-time, till he is cross-eyed.

He has a family and a vocation,
And because one man's chicken is another man's snake,
(And because even if he understood the words
He might not see the point of writing them)
This is all how life laughs at us.
And because you must keep on writing them, nevertheless
This is how we laugh back, at life.
