Once We Were As One Poem by Elia Michael

Once We Were As One

I did not know that you had left this world,
That you had died, that you had gone away.
I often think of you, how your lips curled
To give a smile to me which made my day.
I should have treated you better I know.
When first we met I did not treat you well,
The fault was mine in that time long ago,
Though it was you who tolled the deathly knell
Of our relationship and forced the end;
But you too could have treated me better.
It was not all my fault, not all my friend.
But I can't tell you, you're gone for ever.
If you can read my thoughts where you have gone,
You must admit that once we were as one.
