On Sunday Poem by Olalekan Ololade Sobande

On Sunday

Rating: 5.0

Sunday
What a happy Sunday!
The crowding stony faces of my fellows make me afraid.
Let my mind turn to my God!
5. Today is all saints, the solemn anniversary of the sun.
In all the cemeteries, there was no one to remember except God of God,
O dead who have always refuse to die,
Who have resisted death?
God guards my dreamsas you have guarded your sons
10 “what type of Sunday it is? “ I do not know
“What time of Sunday it is? I do not know
Let all those who are annoyed with me go to church
Let all those who have risen against me go to mosque
Let them have no power over me
15 Let their anger subside.
O! YES! God on whom I wholly depend

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
commentary
This is one of Sobande Olalekan’s earliest poems. The poem in this collection, like on Sunday were inspired by the feeling of anger and prayer. This poem is supposed to be recited by someone who as offended another person; its effectiveness is shown by the fact that by the time the offender gets to the last line, he would have been forgiven. Notice the images used and the fact that the rhythm changes, aided by parallel repetition in the last five lines. This lines not only represent the literacy climax, but also the logical end of the argument of the poem.
