On Parting Poem by Richard Trembath

On Parting

I cannot go and leave thee Love
Denying all we had,
We must admit there was much good
Before there came the bad.
When much is shared then much remains
Regardless of what dies,
And there are things which can't be seen
By any other's eyes.

The bonds of love in early days
Indelibly were writ,
'Though time corrodes and daily love
Is stifled bit by bit
There still remain those ties
Which were by fears and hardship fused,
And they remain though all else die
And though love be abused.

If not as love they yet remain
As mutual respect,
For fickle whims cannot destroy
A bond with sweat stains flecked,
A bond which, made in happier days
By two against the world,
Invited all to challenge it
To prove that it would hold

Time changes all things and today
Although our minds be clear
May prove in days to come to be
Not as we see it here.
Perspective changes and our minds
Depend on our surrounds;
They change, and thus our minds change
Within our vision's bounds.

Though new things come each day to change
Our outlook on this life
Few carry much significance
And fewer cause us strife.
But some come as a sweeping tide
Engulfs all in its path,
They are the tides of change and they
Bring with them aftermath.

And aftermath is what remains,
What's left of you and I,
But though the flood has almost drowned
It cannot make us die.
Though changes come to me and you,
Though love's death see us part,
Time can't destroy what we have shared
Nor erase you from my heart.
