I did something foolish today.
Too heedlessly I thought of you.
Now my heart is singing away.
Lord, what a stupid thing to do!
I said to my heart, 'Hey, dopey -
You know you fall too fast, too deep,
Turning sugary and hope-y -
Here comes heartburn and lack of sleep.'
But that dumb and noisy organ
Plunges headlong into crushes
At the slightest provocation,
Fearing not Man, Beast, or Gorgon,
And, ignoring me, it rushes
Into certain devastation.
